Dahi Bada is the most popular street food in North India. Dahi Bada is definitely served in almost all festivals and Indian weddings.

Dahi Bada is made by mixing both the skinned urad dal and moong dal. It can also be made only from urad dal.

For Dahi Bada
  • Urad dal (skinned black lentils)
  • Curd, 1 kg
  • Oil for frying
  • Asafoetida, 1 pinch
  • Salt, 1/2 tsp
  • Raisins, 8-10
  • Roasted Cumin Powder, 1 tsp
  • Red Chilli powder, 1 tsp
  • Black Salt, 1 tsp
  • Tamarind Sweet Chutney
  • Green Chutney as desired


For making Dahi Bada
  1. Clean the skinned urad dal thoroughly and wash them with clean water two to three times and soak it for 3 to 4 hours.

  3. Now remove the water from the soaked lentils. Add a little water and grind it coarsely in the mixer jar.

  5. Take out the ground lentils in a big vessel and beat them well by hand.

  7. Now add a little salt and a pinch of asafoetida and raisins to the mixture.

  9. If you want, you can add cashew nuts and mix.

  11. Now, we will deep fry Dahi Bade. For this, heat oil in a pan for deep frying. When the oil is hot, fry Dahi Bade in it.

  13. Fry them on a medium flame, because on a high flame they will start burning from above and they will remain raw from inside. Fry them till they become golden.

  15. Take out the fried Dahi Bade from the oil, and put them in another pot containing hot water with a mix of asafoetida and salt. After 10 minutes, remove them from the water and squeeze the water with light hands.

  17. To serve Dahi Bade, beat the curd well and add sugar according to your taste. Now put the Dahi Bade in a serving plate and put curd on it.

  19. Add a little black salt, roasted cumin powder, red chili powder, and sweet tamarind chutney.

  21. Your Dahi Bade is ready to be served and ready to eat. They will come out very soft and tasty.

  1. When grinding the black lentils, add water only if needed.
  2. Make sure to beat the lentils paste well.
  3. You can keep the fried Dahi Bade in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.
